Mild to Moderate Alzheimer's Safety Tips

Taking preventive measures to keep your home safe may save you from a stressful or dangerous situation.

Here are a few tips to start:

  • Because some people with moderate Alzheimer's disease may wander, all outside doors and windows should have secure locks. Locks on bathroom and closet doors should be removed so the person can't be accidentally locked in
  • Cleaning supplies and other chemicals are particularly dangerous – child-proof latches can help secure them in a cabinet
  • All medicines should be labeled and kept in a securely locked location. Dangerous items, such as knives, lighters, matches, and guns, should be kept in a secure place as well
  • Look through the home for items that might contribute to a fall and remove them. Even area rugs can be a tripping hazard. Keep the home well lit, too
  • An automatic shut-off switch on the stove as well as taking off the knobs are great ways to help prevent burns or fire
