Preparing for the Day Checklist

Here's a simple list of things you can do to help make your loved one's day go a little more smoothly. Feel free to Print multiple checklists for each day of the week.

Safety

Be sure all outside doors and windows have secure locks

Remove locks on bathroom doors and closets to avoid accidental lock-ins

Secure cleaning supplies and other household chemicals with child-proof latches

Clearly label all medicines and keep in a locked location

Secure all dangerous items, such as knives, lighters, matches, and guns

Keep the home well lit and remove all tripping hazards, such as area rugs

Bathing

Set water temperature at a comfortable level

Warm up the room and have towels and a robe nearby

Use non-skid mats, grab bars, a shower bench, or a handheld showerhead

Talk your loved one through the process, step by step

Let your loved one help when possible

Never leave your loved one alone in the tub

Dressing

Dress at the same time each day to keep a routine

Limit clothing choices to keep things simple

Lay out clothing in the order the items will be put on

Choose items with elastic or Velcro instead of buttons and zippers

Nutrition

Limit noise and other distractions, such as television

Offer smaller meals throughout the day with fewer food items to keep things simple

Consider serving finger foods in a bowl to avoid handling utensils

For drinks, try using a straw or cup with a lid to limit spills

Keep nutritious snacks on hand to help make eating well more convenient
